Lyndhurst Rail SignLyndhurst Roadhouse is located in the heart of Lyndhurst, a small outback town Gazetted in 1896. This is located at the southern end of the Strzelecki Track. About 40 kilometres south of Lyndhurst is Leigh Creek.

The Aboriginal people Yantruwanta were the original inhabitants of Lyndhurst. In 1882, this town initially served as a freight centre for the railways. The town has also served as a rail outlet for talc mining operations at Mt. Fitton in the Northern Flinders Rangers.

Its population is about 10 with another 20 or so in outlying stations. Lyndhurst and Districts Progress Association manage the town, which supported some large pastoral properties along the northern outwash plains of the ranges including Mt. Lyndhurst and Murnpeowie Stations.
